Dr. Rene Chu was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He also lived in both Edmonton and Hong Kong as he was growing up. Ultimately, he returned to Winnipeg. It was there that he earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree at the University of Manitoba, graduating with Honours. He practiced as a general dentist for 3 years before entering his postgraduate studies in Endodontics at the University of Iowa where he earned both his Masters of Science and his Certificate in Endodontics. He has achieved board certification through both the Royal College of Dentists and the American Board of Endodontics.
Rene was also awarded the prestigious American Association of Endodontists Educator Fellowship after entrance into his residency program. He continued his passion of both endodontics and education by returning to his alma mater to become a full-time faculty member at the University of Manitoba. At the University, he served as the Division head of Endodontics, a Clinical Team lead and the Digital Technology Advisor of the Undergraduate and Graduate Dental Clinics. He has served as an advisor and research lead on numerous post-graduate and undergraduate research programs.
He has been an active participant at the American Association of Endodontists serving two terms on the Research and Scientific Affairs committee and continues as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board at the Journal of Endodontics. He also served as Chair of the Endodontic section of the American Dental Education Association. Locally he served on numerous committees for the Manitoba Dental Association. He has spoken at both national and international venues. Currently, he is an active participant at the National Dental Examining Board in the creation of the general dentistry examination and the endodontics specialty examination. He also looks forward to joining the clinical faculty at UBC in the coming months to continue his involvement with teaching.
He has been recognized for his contributions to academics and organized dentistry through numerous teaching awards. He has also been recognized by his peers through his nomination to the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
Rene speaks both fluent English and Cantonese. He looks forward to bringing his skills and experience to serve the Greater Vancouver community.
